Our Water. Our Voice. Our Future.

Why Sun City West and surrounding community residents need to #GetInvolved in the EPCOR Rate Case

What happens when your water bill becomes the subject of a major rate case before the Arizona Corporation Commission?

You get involved.
EPCOR Water Arizona has filed an application with the Arizona Corporation Commission seeking approval to increase rates and charges for water service, while also proposing changes involving consolidation of several water districts. The case affects Sun City West directly and could have a significant impact on what residents pay for water. EPCOR FLyer

And this is not something that PORA intends to simply watch from the sidelines.

PORA is getting to work.

PORA is working alongside RUCO — the Residential Utility Consumer Office — and PIRG to understand the details of EPCOR’s proposal, educate our residents, and prepare for the Arizona Corporation Commission public hearings in early 2027.

Our goal is simple:

Make sure the voice of Sun City West is heard.
This isn’t about being against water improvements or responsible utility management. It’s about making sure any proposed increases are fair, justified, transparent and in the best interests of the residents who ultimately pay the bills.

The numbers matter.
The EPCOR public notice shows that a typical Sun City West residential customer using approximately 7,000 gallons per month currently has a total monthly bill of about $39.15.

Under EPCOR’s proposed standalone rate, that figure is shown at approximately $65.97 per month.

Under the proposed consolidation structure, the final step shown in the notice would be approximately $54.41 per month.

Those aren’t just numbers on a regulatory filing.

They represent real dollars coming out of the pockets of Sun City West homeowners.
And that’s why understanding this case matters.

But here’s the most important part:

The public has a voice. The Arizona Corporation Commission has scheduled public comment opportunities in this case for:

📅 February 2, 2027
📅 March 15, 2027

The formal hearing is scheduled to begin April 19, 2027, at 10:00 AM at the Arizona Corporation Commission offices in Phoenix.

That means there is time to learn.
There is time to ask questions.
There is time to understand the proposal.
And there is time for Sun City West residents to organize and make their voices heard.

It starts October 26.

PORA is inviting area community residents to join us for an important community presentation featuring representatives from RUCO and PIRG.

  1. SCW consumers went through the same scenario during the last Epcor water rate increase filing. Once again we must fight these outrageous increases and/or potential consolidation of districts if not in our best interests. PORA we need your help on this issue!

    • Totally agree James. PORA is uniting with Sun City, The Grand, Corte Bella, and surrounding communities to inform, educate residents on how they can get involved. This is going to TAKE THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY to #GetInvolved.

Sharing social media posts, sharing meeting notices, attending presentations, supporting PORA events and services.

      Stay tuned, there’s more coming!

  2. The cost factors used in this article do not read true to me. I have Epcor bills monthly for OVER $70 per month. I like the idea of $35, but that just is not so. Since most of my bill is for sewer, etc. that I cannot reduce…..I believe that throws the projected numbers you show here as under what will be, by about $40/month.

  3. EPCOR continues to increase their rates & the comparison above does not reflect the true bill we pay as they have left off the sewer charge. Once again those folks who are not here in the winter get charged the sewer rate based on water that is used solely for outside irrigation not effecting any water going into the sewer. Is there anything that can be done about this?

  4. I also am in this same boat. re: Barbara’s comments. I am have a bill of over $70 every month and it isn’t because I use very much water at all. I have no power to reduce what I pay. The projected numbers are off.
